FAQs for Parents

1. What exactly is a sealant and why should my child have them applied?

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent cavities. Food and bacteria can get stuck in the uneven areas of these teeth where tooth brushing, floss and rinses can’t reach. Sealants cover these areas and keep out the food and bacteria. Sealants can reduce tooth decay by 80% and eliminates the need for costly dental work. Studies have shown that in teeth that remain sealed, protection is 100%.

2. What happens if the sealant chips or comes off?

We guarantee sealants for 3 years. If any come off during that time period we will replace them for free. Every time we see your child we will check to see if the sealants are still in place. 60 – 85% are still in place after 5 years.

3. Can I bring in siblings?

Yes! We are happy to see siblings! Many times the program is only offered at the elementary school level and there are preschoolers and middle/high school siblings that could benefit also. Give us a call and we will send you a consent form.

4. Does anything hurt?

No, there should not be any pain. We have a non-invasive program. The screening is a visual screening only. Fluoride varnish and sealant applications are painless. We take care to let the kids know what will happen and what the noisy equipment does. Some children do have sensitive teeth and there is a space on the consent form to let us know about that and other issues.

5. Can my child eat lunch that day?

Yes! We work around the school’s lunch times so children don’t miss out on their lunch. None of our procedures interfere with eating or drinking.

6. My child is very afraid and nervous. Will you try to see him/her?

We are happy to attempt to see every child, no matter if they are nervous or afraid or bite or have special needs. Our staff has experience with these issues and will do their best to reassure and help the child to relax enough that services can be provided. We involve the child in every step of the procedures so they know what to expect and there are no surprises. If the child is not able to participate then there is no charge. We will send home a form indicating what we were able to do. We have a high rate of success and rarely have kids not want to cooperate.

7. Can my special needs child be seen?

We are more than happy to have your child participate in our program even if there are physical or mental issues that need accommodating. Let us know before our visit by noting the special needs on the consent form under the medical section.

8. If my child sees you does he need to see a dentist?

Our program does not take the place of a regular dentist visit. We do a visual screening only. There may be decay that we cannot see. Your child will need to see a dentist to get regular x-rays and any dental work that needs to be done. We can provide a referral to a child friendly dentist in your area.

9. How can I contact you?

You can contact us by phone, email or regular mail. We are a mobile dental program so we do not have a physical office that can be visited. Our information phone number is 360-619-8279. We try to answer each phone call, but in the event that we are unable to come to the phone, please leave a message with your name and contact number. All messages are returned as soon as possible.

A second contact number is 360-601-0396. That number is for the director of the program. She is also one of the actively working hygienists and is not always available to answer the phone. Leave a message and it will be returned as soon as possible.
You can email us at dreamteamdental.jm@hotmail.com. Email is checked regularly throughout the day.

Our mailing address is Dream Team Dental, 1701 Broadway, #411, Vancouver, WA 98663

FAQS for Schools:

1. What kind of space do you need?

Ideally we would love a 12’ X 20’ space. However, we can set up in a smaller space if needed. We have worked in libraries, gymnasiums, stages, health rooms, offices, faculty rooms, portables and even in hallway areas. Let us know what you have available and we will work with it.

2. What do we have to provide?

Other than a space to work in, absolutely nothing!

3. What is expected for the school to do to get children signed up?

About 6 weeks before our visit, we will send you the parent letters and consent forms. These are given to the teachers to send home with kids. A due date is on the form and the teachers just need to collect the forms and turn them into the contact person, usually the school nurse, by the due date. The forms are then mailed back to us and we take care of all of the paperwork and contacting parents if necessary.

4. Do we need to provide anyone to help you on the day of your visit?

We do not require any additional help, however it is always nice to have a parent volunteer to go and get kids from classrooms. This accomplishes two things. The parent is more familiar with the school layout than we are so it helps to keep the flow of things moving smoothly and kids are not so nervous to leave the classroom with a familiar face rather than someone they don’t know.

5. How often do you visit schools?

We can visit every 6 months. Because the school year is on a 9 month schedule we are not always able to get a second visit in. We will work with schools to visit as often as they want us too.

6. How many kids can you see in a day?

We can process about 12-15 kids a day, depending on what services the parent’s have consented too. Most school visits can be accomplished in two days.

7. Is there a cost to the school?

No. The school does not incur any expense. We provide all of the materials necessary for our program to come into your school or facility.
